MY STUDIO
It was updated and improved in autumn 2005 with new equipment, and I'm really satisfied with the sound quality I can achieve with my new gear.
I am producing and recording almost all my vocal performances here.
The albums with Richard Andersson, Claes Corin, Street Talk, XsavioR and all the upcoming stuff was/will be recorded by me in my homestudio, very relaxing work schedules, without time pressure.
Microphone
My microphone is not a standard Neumann U47. The internal circuitry is from an M49, matched with the original diaphragm from the U47.
For a funny coincidence, Marie Fredriksson from Roxette used a copy of the same mic to record the "Joyride" album.
The main rig
Very simple, yet effective choice of components.
- a preamplifier: it amplifies the signal received from the microphone.
- a compressor: it keeps the volume from going too quiet or too loud.
- a converter: it "converts" the audio signal into digital form and feeds it to the computer for recording.
You can also notice a tiny mixer on top and an effect processor at the bottom.
For the experts, here comes a detailed description of each unit.
The vocal pre-amp
This is an exclusive piece of gear! An MDI-400 preamplifier, modified from an old MCI mixerboard by Dragan Tanaskovic (owner of Bohus Sound Studios and founder member of Kharma). MCI used to make high-end studio equipment before being acquired by Sony in 1992. There are only 20 units like this in the whole world!
For Kharma, Karmakanic and a few other albums, I have used a Fairman stereo tube preamp/compressor combo.
The compressor and AD/DA converter
The LA-3A is a solid-state audio compressor, a reissue of the original unit built by UREI, very well-known and widely used in recording studios all over the world since the late 60's. It's the perfect choice for compressing vocal tracks.
To capture my vocals, I use a MOTU HD192 interface, one of the best sounding analog-to-digital converters on the market, connected via PCI to the computer.
